Bayside Garden Rules & Expectations
Our community garden thrives when everyone works together with respect and care. These rules ensure that each gardener has a safe, enjoyable, and productive experience while keeping our shared space beautiful and welcoming. By following these guidelines, you help maintain a positive environment for all gardeners and support the long-term success of the garden.
Participation & Plot Care
Active Use: All plots must be planted and in active use by April 1.
Ongoing Maintenance: Gardeners are responsible for:
Regular watering, weeding, and harvesting.
Keeping pathways and surrounding community areas clear and weed-free.
Removing trash, dead plants, or diseased material promptly.
Community Hours: Each gardener must contribute at least 8 hours per year to work parties, community events, or Giving Garden support.
Planting Guidelines
Diversity: Each plot should contain a mix of vegetables and flowers to support pollinators and promote a healthy ecosystem.
Invasive Plants:
Not allowed: Morning glory, mint (in the ground), and other invasive plants that spread aggressively.
Allowed with care: Raspberries may be planted but must be maintained so they do not spread into pathways or neighboring plots.
Crop Placement: Tall crops (like corn or sunflowers) should not shade neighboring plots.
What Counts as Neglect
A plot may be considered neglected if any of the following occur:
No planting is visible by April 1.
Weeds are over 12 inches tall, spreading into pathways, or invading neighboring plots.
The plot is filled with trash, tools, or non-garden items.
Plants are consistently left unharvested and rotting.
Dead, diseased, or pest-infested plants are not removed.
Pathways around the plot are overgrown, blocked, or unsafe.
Neglect & Reassignment Process
If your plot appears neglected, you’ll receive one written notice.
You’ll have 7 days to respond and correct the issue.
If there’s no response or visible improvement, your plot will be reassigned to the waitlist.
After reassignment, you will not have access to your plot for the remainder of the season.
Garden Foster Support
We understand that life happens. If you’re facing an emergency, illness, or cannot care for your plot temporarily:
Contact us to request a Garden Foster (a fellow gardener who can help with watering, weeding, and upkeep).
As a thank-you, Garden Fosters may place a few potted plants in your plot (no permanent planting unless agreed in advance).
To request a Foster, email us or leave a note in the tool shed drop box.
Organic & Respectful Practices
Organic only: No synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers.
Water wisely: Hand-watering preferred; never leave hoses running.
Shared tools: Clean and return all tools after use.
Community Conduct
Respect your neighbors’ space, plants, and harvest.
Do not pick from any plot other than your own.
Children must be supervised.
Pets must remain leashed and picked up after.
End-of-Season Cleanup
All gardeners must clear their plots at the end of their growing season.
This includes removing cages, stakes, supports, dead plants, weeds, and personal items.
Plots left uncleared may result in loss of renewal privileges for the following season.
Communication Is Key
We want you to succeed. If life gets busy, please let us know right away. Temporary exceptions can be made if you reach out before your plot falls behind.
